Disclosing your full package benefits employers as well as the candidate. Find out why salary transparency is vital when recruiting.

We find a lot of employers can be reluctant to disclose their full package details when recruiting. We get it, it’s awkward discussing the price tag on a job, especially when other existing members of staff spot the ad. But we encourage employers to address the elephant in the room.

Secretiveness around salary is not our style at K.A.G. Recruitment – we have been in the business long enough to know right from wrong. You could be doing more harm than good when writing up your advertisement. We’re going to lay out why.

Limits on searches

When you don’t disclose the salary bracket, your job advertisement will filter out of searches. You could be losing a large chunk of potential candidates. It acts as an early screening process, ensuring those who aren’t content with the salary bracket, don’t apply.

Waves red flags

Many candidates won’t apply for a role if the salary isn’t disclosed. This is because they see it as a huge red flag. Don’t let your lack of salary transparency come between you and your reputation. You want the highest calibre of candidates to choose from. If you’re wondering how to hire the best candidate, check out our latest blog on this.

Wastes time

If a candidate is applying for your role without knowing the salary, they’re submitting their application blind. This risks the candidate not being right for the role, or the role not being right for them. Both parties suffer a lengthy process to discover it’s just not what either of them wanted – and I’m sure we’d all prefer a happy ending! This point alone should be enough to encourage full salary transparency. No one likes to waste their time.

No more negotiating power

Once upon a time, not disclosing the salary in the job post would probably have given you more negotiating power. We don’t believe this to be true. Candidates can easily do a quick google search to see how much they should be getting paid and your negotiating tactic is down the toilet.

Shows a lack of transparency

You can deny it as much as you like but the truth is that salary is one of the first things candidates will look at, not the unlimited tea and coffee… We’re not suggesting you hire someone who’s money motivated (unless that’s what you’re into) but it would be valid to say that we all go to work, to make money, to afford our lifestyles.

Advertising the full package you intend to offer, gets the cumbersome matter out of the way. Doing so reassures the candidate, clarifies expectations, and shows that your company doesn’t have anything to hide.

Indicates existing discrimination

Following on from transparency, disclosing salaries in job posts could tackle the gender pay gap. By stating the salary bracket, applicants lessen their chances of being underpaid and taken for granted. Show that your company is fair and diverse. Candidates will ask themselves if the salary hasn’t been disclosed, then why? Are there counter-parts for an identical role on more/less income?

If you’re an employer looking to recruit, what would you disclose in your advertisement? If you’re still not sold on disclosing your full package – then ask yourself why.

Is there some hesitation around the quality of the package, in which case, we ask should it even be advertised in the first place?

Our Knowledge recruitment training service at K.A.G. Recruitment supports our clients with making the right offer to candidates, knowing how to craft appealing adverts, and understanding how to sell your company and your opportunity.

Above all else, we strive for honesty in recruiting.
