Over the last few years, I’ve had many conversations with candidates regarding graduate schemes.

What is the period of learning?

When does the programme end?

How can I progress quicker?

My advice to anyone joining a Graduate programme would be:

1 Enjoy it, it’s part of the start of YOUR career.

2 Take on board advice or even criticism from mentors or peers as you are learning and they have probably been through what you are currently experiencing.

3 You WILL make mistakes, learn from them don’t dwell on them.

4 And the MOST important point. DON’T try to come off your programme before the term ends. Most programmes are designed around business exposure and knowledge, responsibility and timeframes.  Whilst you are on a programme you are protected to a certain extent and your manager has a duty of care to ensure that you are equipped with the tools that you need to be able to do the job required of you.

Once in a substantive post you will be required to be competent in your role and responsible for your delivery, so PLEASE ensure you feel ready and prepared to take ownership of this before you take the leap.
